DESCRIPTION
This course will dive into the seminal theories of play therapy to assist learners in understanding how to conceptualize and work with clients from a theoretical framework. In this course, you will self-reflect on your beliefs about yourself, the client, and the world in order to identify a play therapy theory that best aligns with your beliefs. From there, we will practice conceptualizing clients and cases based on various seminal theories. This course is intended to meet the requirements for Phase 1 - Play Therapy Seminal or Historically Significant Theories for the requirements to apply for a Registered Play Therapist Credential.

HISTORY OF PLAY THERAPY

DESCRIPTION
If you have ever wondered how the wonderful world of play therapy was discovered, look no further. In this course, we will take a dive into the history of play therapy. We will explore how play therapy originated all the way to current and relevant research in the field. Learners in this course will leave with a deeper understanding of play in order to advocate the power of play to parents, educators, and other professionals. This course is intended to provide 3 hours towards the required 5 hours of Play Therapy History needed to apply for a Registered Play Therapy Credential.

In play therapy, the most powerful tool is not the toys or techniques—it’s the therapist. This experiential workshop explores the vital role of the therapist’s self in the therapeutic process, emphasizing how authenticity, self-awareness, and emotional presence shape the healing relationship with the child.
Participants will engage in reflective exercises, group discussion, and experiential activities designed to deepen their understanding of how their personal history, emotional responses, and relational style influence the therapeutic space. We will also examine the therapist’s use of self through the lens of attachment theory, countertransference, and attunement within play therapy.
Whether you're new to play therapy or a seasoned practitioner, this workshop invites you to reconnect with your inner child, enhance your emotional availability, and cultivate a deeper, more meaningful presence in your work with children.
